The New York, Ontario and
Western Railroad ... what's left in Liberty NOW
Almost fifty years after the
last train, pitifully little remains of the O&W Railroad. It
basically defined the communities that make up Liberty, along with the
other communities up and down the line where it snaked through Sullivan
County. As well as some
pictures, there's also a link to the
NYO&W's
Historical Society so you can see what the "Old Woman" looked like
in better times....
|
When skiing was still a
backyard sport...
-- a few photographs of that one-time (and
long-gone) Liberty institution....
(there's also more Walnut Mountain Ski
Area material on Volume II)
|
The Borscht Circuit and
before...
-- some rare photos of the resort industry
in Liberty before the Borscht Circuit, some memorabilia from those glory
days, and a link to THE authoritative site about the history of the resort industry in the
Catskills....
(there's also more material on
Volume II related to the
resort industries that have been centered in Liberty)

Want to
reminisce about Liberty?
There are some great Liberty stories out
there!! We've wondered how we could capture some of them, and inspire
others to remember even more. Here's the answer we've come up
with. It's run by "Yahoo!" and its
name is "Yahoo!Groups™".
We've set up a Yahoo!Group called
"LibertyNY". It costs nothing to belong to a Yahoo!Group,
and we encourage everyone with a Liberty story to tell or a Liberty
question to ask to try it out. There are more than 200 members, and we
talk about some pretty unusual things -- but always with a connection
to Liberty!!
to subscribe to the LibertyNY Yahoo! Group.
Sign up and reminisce about Liberty with the rest of us!

If
you're interested in the history of Liberty, New York, or Sullivan County, or small towns in America
right around the time of World War I, or changing social
and cultural values in such areas as ethnicity (Liberty, where Nichols' Farm was about to become the site of the legendary Grossingers, one of the hubs of the
Borscht Circuit), and gender (what you'll see on this CD-ROM will surprise
nearly everyone), you
will find this CD-ROM of interest. Education? The way teachers were
trained in an era when the US had a higher literacy rate than it does today?
Interscholastic athletics at the beginning? What remains of the New York Ontario &
Western Railway? Skiing when it was almost a backyard sport? |

have said about
the original Liberty CD-ROM...
