Wyoming County, NY History

Wyoming County NY history

We are happy to offer our first items of genealogy and local history from Wyoming County, NY, and we plan to offer additional items of historical interest soon.

Now Available for Download:

The Wyoming County chapter from Mather & Brockett's Geographical History of the State of New York (1848).  This early gazetteer (compare it with French's Gazetteer, below) preceded French's by only a dozen years, but clearly represented another time in development of New York State.  Interestingly, this chapter has four pages, compared with five for French's later volume.  In addition to the four pages specifically about Wyoming County, we also include the section from Mather & Brockett dealing with land grants and patents in New York State.  4++ pages, in PDF format, download now for $2.25.

The Wyoming County chapter from French's Gazetteer of the State of New York (1860).  French's is the authoritative gazetteer of New York State for the period immediately preceding the Civil War, and many subsequent gazetteers "borrowed" extensively from it.  The following localities are mentioned in the text: Attica, Attica Center, Vernal, Bennington, Bennington Center, Cowlesville, Folsomdale, Castile, St. Helena, China, Arcade, East China, Covington, Covington Center, La Grange, Pearl Creek, Peoria, Eagle, Eagle Village, Gainesville, Gainesville Creek, East Gainesville, Gainesville Center, Newburgh, Genesee Falls, Portageville, Java, Java Village, North Java, Java Center, East Java, Curriers Corners, Williamsville, Middlebury, Wyoming, West Middlebury, Orangeville, Orangeville Center, Johnsonburg, Halls Corners, Perry, Perry Center, West Perry, Pike, East Pike, Pike Five Corners, Griffiths Corners, East Coy, Sheldon, Strykersville, Varysburgh, Sheldon, North Sheldon, Johnsonburgh, Warsaw, South Warsaw, East Warsaw, Wethersfield, Wethersfield Springs, Hermitage, and Smiths Corners.   Only 5+ pages, but there's some justification since the county was carved out from Genesee County just 19 years before publication of this gazetteer.  PDF format.  Download now for $1.75.
