Saint Lawrence County history, genealogy, americana

We continue our offerings from the "North Country" of New York State with St. Lawrence County.

We expect to have additional offerings here in coming months, so please check back.

Available for Download

St. Lawrence County chapter from French's Gazetteer of the State of New York (1860).

The north country of New York State is not a particularly popular topic today, and we are pleased to help bring that region the attention it deserves.  We intend to provide additional historical and genealogical material from the area as downloads in the future; how quickly they appear depends to some extent on how popular this offering is.  14+ pages, in PDF format, download now for $2.75.

St. Lawrence County, from French's Gazetteer

St. Lawrence County from Mather & Brockett's Geographical History of the State of New York (1848)

A dozen years before French's Gazetteer, Mather and Brockett prepared and published their Geographical History.  Much clearly changed in those dozen years, and this article is helpful in understanding the changes.  5++ pages, in PDF format, download now for $2.00.

St. Lawrence County in Mather & Brockett (1848)

Awaiting publication:

The History of the City of Ogdensburg, by Rt. Rev. P.S. Garand, D. D., V. G.

(1927) 449 pages of well-researched, well-written history of the only city in St. Lawrence County, going back to exploration and missionary activity in the area in colonial times.  We purchased this volume only recently, and at this point it is the only major St. Lawrence County item we own.  We would like to ascertain if visitors to our website think we should pay more attention to this area.  Please let us know!

Addendum:

Unfortunately, we're not in a position to re-publish this item at the present time due to copyright limitations – the book was copyrighted in 1927, and our attorney advises us that this copyright is still in effect (until Congress changes the 1923 date, before which everything is in the public domain now)(regrettably, this date does not advance as the years pass; evidently its establishment was initiated by the Walt Disney interests to protect their ownership of the Mickey Mouse character “forever”).

St. Lawrence County was created from Clinton County, with annexed portions of Montgomery, Herkimer, and Oneida counties, in 1802.  You may also want to consult Our Clinton County page, our Montgomery County page, our Herkimer County page, and our Oneida County page for locations that may have been affected by this transaction.
