Orleans County, NY History

Orleans County, New York history

We are happy to offer our first items of genealogy and local history from Orleans County, NY, and we plan to offer additional items of historical interest soon.

Now Available for Download

Orleans County in Mather & Brockett's Geographical History of the State of New York (1848).  Mather and Brockett treated the upstate counties a bit unevenly in terms of coverage, and Orleans County was one of the least favored.  While the coverage extends across four pages of the volume, regrettably there are only a scant three pages of material.  We do also include the section of Mather and Brockett relating to the land grants and patents of New York State as a supplement, however.  4++ pages, in PDF format, download now for $1.00.

Orleans County, NY in Mather & Brockett

The Orleans County chapter from French's Gazetteer of the State of New York (1860). Here is a look at Orleans County a bit over a decade after Mather & Brockett's treatment of the subject.  The localities mentioned in boldface type in this chapter are:  Barre, Albion, Barre Center, Eagle Harbor, South Barre, Jacksons Corners, Rich's Corners, Carlton, East Carlton, West Carlton, Waterport, Kenyonville, Carlton Center, Manilla, Clarendon, Gaines, East Gaines, West Gaines, Fairhaven, Gaines Basin, Kendall, West Kendall, Kendall Mills, Murray, Holley, Hulberton, Hindsburgh, Brockville, Murray Depot, Ridgeway, Medina, Knowlesville, Oak Orchard, Jeddo, North Ridgeway, Shelby, Millville, East Shelby, Shelby Basin, West Shelby, Yates, Lyndonville, Yates Center, and County Line.  5+ pages, in PDF format, download now for $1.75.

Orleans County in French's Gazetteer (1860)

Charity in New York State in 1906: State Institutions.  This chapter from volume II of the Annual Report of the State Board of Charities for the year 1906 contains a section about the New York State government's Western House of Refuge for Women, located in Albion, Orleans County, NY.  See our New York State Miscellany page for more information about this chapter.

See also: Hotchkin's History of Western New York State, available on CD-ROM.

See also:  relevant material in the NYS Canal Commissioners Report for 1878 available for download on our New York State Miscellany page.

Orleans County was separated from Genesee County in 1824.  You may also want to consult our Genesee County page for locations that may have been affected by this transaction.
