Chemung County, NY History

Chemung County, New York history

We are happy to offer our first items of genealogy and local history from Chemung County, NY, and we plan to offer additional items of historical interest soon.

Now Available for Download

The Chemung County chapter in Mather & Brockett's Geographical History of the State of New York (1848). At slightly under five pages in total, brief, but around average coverage for an upstate county in this early work.  In addition to the five pages on Chemung County, we also include the section of this work on land grants and patents as background.  Despite the brevity of their treatment of Chemung County, this is still an important part of the historical record.  5++ pages, in PDF format, download now for $2.00.

Chemung County in Mather & Brockett (1848)

The Chemung County chapter from French's Gazetteer of the State of New York (1860). Here is a subsequent but not much longer look at Chemung County a bit over a decade after Mather & Brockett's treatment of the subject.  The localities mentioned in this chapter, most of which are still extant today, are:  Baldwin, Hammonds Corners, Big Flats, Catlin, Catlin Center, Pond Creek, Chemung, Breckville, Baldwin, Elmira, Erin, South Erin, State Road, Horseheads, Breesport, Southport, Wellsburgh, Webbs Mills, Seely Creek, Van Etten, Van Ettenville, Cayuta, Veteran, Millport, Sullivanville, and Pine Valley.  5+ pages, in PDF format, download now for $1.75.

Chemung County was separated from Tioga County in 1836.  You may also want to consult our Tioga County page for locations that may have been affected by this transaction.

Chemung County was subsequently divided (with two other counties) to form Schuyler County.  You may want to visit our Schuyler County page to learn more about this division.
