The Schuyler County chapter from French's Gazetteer of the State of New York (1860). Here is a look at Schuyler County, an entity only for six years when French's Gazetteer was published. The localities mentioned in boldface in this chapter, the names of only a few of which strike a familiar chord today, are: Catharines, Havana, Odessa, Alpine, Cayuta, Dix, Watkins, Beaver Dams, Townsend, Crawford Settlement, Hector, Perry City, Mecklenburgh, Reynoldsville, Bennetsburgh, Burdett, Peach Orchard, Polkville, Searsburgh, North Hector, Cayutaville, Steamburgh, Orange, Monterey, Sugar Hill, Reading, Reading Center, Irelandsville, North Reading, Tyrone, Weston, Altay, and Pine Grove. 4+ pages, in PDF format, download now for $2.00.
Charity in New York State in 1906: Schuyler County. We are in the process of republishing sections of volume II of the Annual Report of the State Board of Charities for the year 1906. The material will be of interest to local historians who wish a better picture of charitable institutions in their locale a century ago, to genealogists and family historians interested in the people who administered charity back then as well as how any unfortunates housed in these facilities may have lived, and to those who have questions about the now-politicized "safety net" for the unfortunates in our society back in those years. This section addresses the public and private charities in Schuyler County in 1906 that were registered with the State Board of Charities. 2+ pages, in PDF format, download now FREE.
Note that since Schuyler County was founded (1854) after the publication
of Mather & Brockett's Geographical History of the State of New York
(1848), we must refer you to the chapters of that work for the
counties from which Schuyler County was carved out. See our
Steuben County page, our
Chemung County page, and our
Tompkins County page for coverage
of what was to become Schuyler County.
