More New York State titles we own that we're going to get around to
re-publishing sooner or later
(we promise!):
Genesee
County Business Directory (1882)
Published by A. J. Craft, 455 pages.
While roughly 140 pages of this directory are dedicated to the legal
practices and customs in business in those days (and a lengthy article on
James G. Garfield, the President who was assassinated in 1881 -- which the
text calls "...the saddest history of the American Nation"), the remainder
(and by far the largest part of the volume) is of great interest to
genealogists and historians today. Included are histories, including
early settlers, of Genesee County and its constituent towns, Genesee County
business by type, and perhaps most important, a directory of individuals and
businesses in the county, arranged by town. Post office, occupation,
and number of acres for farmers, are included. This directory is 230
pages long. There is also a decent amount of advertising.
Duanesburg (Schnectady
County) NY School Attendance Registers.
These attendance records, mainly for
School District 22 in the Town of Duanesburg, were an impulse purchase on
eBay. The school years for which we have the originals include
1902-1903, 1905-1906, 1906-1907, 1909-1910, 1910-1911, 1911-1912, 1913-1914,
1914-1915, 1917-1918, 1918-1919, 1919-1920, 1921-1922, 1922-1923, 1923-1924,
1925-1926. We also have District 17's record book for 1923-1924 only.
The State Education Department altered the format of the books from year to
year. However, many have a reconciliation to the census, all identify
the school children and their parents or guardians by name, all contain
extensive attendance records by the child for the year, at least one has a
schedule of physical defects noted in each child, and some have registers of
visitors to the school. This is local history absolutely first-hand,
but due to its very limited scope we will defer publication until we have an
indication of interest in it. Please let us know if this is of
interest to you.
Frederick J. Seaver's
Historical Sketches of Franklin County, New York
(1918). This is a first-rate county
history of the county known as "The Siberia of New York" -- a county that
was settled late but still managed to accumulate some interesting history in
the years between its settlement and Mr. Seaver's book's original
publication. It's 819 pages long, and contains not only county history
but also considerable material on the towns, including an appendix with the
then-current and previous officials and institutions. The book also
includes 75 pages of short biographical sketches. We would like to
hear from you if this is of any potential interest to you. It's not
currently prioritized, but it can be if we receive sufficient indications of
interest.
Daniel E. Wager's
Oneida County, New York
(1896). A three part book of local history
about a section of New York State with plenty of it to recount. Part
1, consisting of 636 pages, is a more or less traditional county history,
including history of all the townships that make up the county. Part 2
is biography of locally eminent personages -- 211 pages of it. That is
followed by 382 pages of family history in Part 3. The indices for
parts 1 and 2 are complete, and the family history index is complete through
the letter L and includes the early M entries. Before undertaking to
publish this one, we will see if we can locate the remainder of the index to
part 3. However, this volume will be a major undertaking so we
appreciate those with an interest letting us know of it beforehand, with no
obligation to purchase.
Washington Frothingham's
History of Montgomery County
(1892). 450 pages of history of the
county that includes Amsterdam, Canajoharie, and a significant section of
the historic Mohawk Valley, plus 325 pages of family histories of the area,
plus three indexes comprise this volume. Included as well on
unnumbered pages are some nice portraits of significant people of the era
when the book was written. This one, a recent purchase by us, is
pretty certainly in the queue for production as it is complete,
well-written, of high quality, and already indexed. Let us know if
this is of interest to you, and perhaps we can advance it on the priority
list a bit.
W. Max Reid's
The Mohawk Valley: Its Legends and Its
History
(1907). This is a nice area history
with abundant colorful legends to supplement it. In its 545 (including
index) pages are also included a number of photographs by J. Arthur Maney.
It's light reading, and a good introduction to the area, as perceived a
century ago. Tell us if this looks like something you would be
interested in!
Cross Family Association's
Cross:
New York State, 1775 - 1975
(1976). This typescript was
prepared by the Cross Family Association (descendents of Noah Cross, who
deserted from the British Army and married Rachel Osterhout in Rochester,
Ulster County, NY in 1775). Around 170 pages of genealogy plus a 33 page index
we compiled some years ago. Let us know if this is of interest
to you.
Historic Wallkill Valley
(1903). "Historic Wallkill Valley,
Orange and Ulster Counties, New York, Sussex C., New Jersey, and Their
Environs" is the full title of this 146 page "booklet," evidently the 10th
in a series. This issue concentrates on Walden and also contains
articles on such topics as historical incidents in the Valley, New Fort,
Goodwill, Wesley Grove (Neelytown), Montgomery, and Mount Beacon. As
well as many pages of advertisements by area businesses, there are
photographs of dignitaries, living and dead, and lists of leaders of various
civic and governmental institutions in the area. This one is near the
top of our priority list to re-publish. Be sure to let us know if you
feel the same way!
Edgar C. Emerson's
Jefferson County, New York
Here is a nice Jefferson County item that
looks like it should be useful to anyone doing genealogy and local history
in that locale. Published in 1898, it is in three parts: part 1,
consisting of 875 pages, is the county and town history section. Part
II, biographies of notables, is around 60 pages long. Following that,
Part III consists of 276 pages of "personal references." There are
three separate indexes, consisting of around 50 pages -- saving us the
necessity of indexing such a large volume. There is also a large number of
pictures, both portraits and views of county scenes, in addition to the
numbered pages. All in all, there's a huge amount of information here,
in what appears to be a very accessible form for that era. If the
Watertown, NY area is of interest to you, you'll want this one.
Day Book: Brown's Store,
Stone Mills, Jefferson County, NY
(November 1853 - November 1854). This
is a one-of-a-kind original day book (sales and purchases) for a pre-Civil
War country store located in Orleans Township. If you had an ancestor in
that tiny community, or if you have an interest in knowing how country
stores worked at that period of time, you will have a wonderful time with
this. We're certainly not expecting this one to sell many copies, and
the page size is too large for our scanners, so
we'll wait for an indication of interest before we prepare this CD-ROM.
Proceeding of the
Jefferson County Board of Supervisors
(1934)
There is quite a bit of local history and
some genealogy in this 367 page volume. These include the coroner's
report (with names, dates, and causes of death), the sheriff's report
(including information about all those consigned to mental health or
delinquent facilities during the year, with some family information) and
minutes of all of the meetings during the year, as well as financial
information. This is a pretty specialized item, so we'll wait for
indications of interest before we schedule republication.
The Kingston Academy Spectator for 1909
This is an attractive early example of a
school yearbook of 68 pages. There's a surprising large number of
photographs for a yearbook of this vintage, as well as several pages of ads.
This looks like it will be part of an Ulster County offering when we collect
sufficient material to justify one.
The
Saugerties High School Sawyer for 1935
A nice, useful yearbook, with higher
quality photography and printing than one expects from these depression
times. We're holding this one in reserve to accompany some still to be
determined publishing project for that area.
Mrs. L. M. Hammond's
History of Madison County, State of New
York
(1872). This
is one of the classic county histories of that period, covering a most
interesting county, event by event and township by township. One serious
defect is the absence of an index. At 775 pages in length, indexing it is
a daunting task, but one we will get to eventually. Just when "eventually"
is depends upon what we hear from you. Let us know if this title is of
interest to you!
Washington Irving's A History of New York from the beginning of the World to
the End of the Dutch Dynasty
by "Diedrich Knickerbocker" (1864). This
is a classic, but scarce.
for more information!
Gazetteer of the State of New York
by J. H. French (1860). 751 pages.
This is really a classic New York State source, and difficult to locate at
anything approaching an affordable price. There is detailed
information about every county in the state, together with fact-loaded
chapters on railroads, banks, other corporations, religions and religious
organizations, and much, much more.
The Life and Letters of Roscoe Conkling, orator, statesman, and advocate
by
Alfred R. Conkling (1889). 709 pages. Roscoe Conkling? Think of
the Tweed Ring, the disputed presidential election of 1872, the Utica NY area.
Roscoe Conkling was a man who wielded tremendous power on a national level in the days of
the political "spoils system" -- written by a family member.
Barnard College annuals
and the
The Barnard College Song Book.
for more information about these items
from the 1920s.
So far, we've seen not much demand for
these items. Consider this project to be "on hold" until further notice.

our page on place names in Sullivan that don't exist anymore, and
what (if anything) has taken their place. If you've ever been seeking an
ancestor, or a location where a historic event took place, and have found
yourself unable to get past an old place name that has changed, you'll
appreciate this finding aid. We've also started a page of links to
