Minisink and Port Jervis, Orange County, New York

Minisink and Port Jervis, our first venture in Orange County, NY, contains valuable resources for research in genealogy and local history.

This CD-ROM is now available!  Ordering information about the Minisink & Port Jervis CD-ROM for ordering information.

CONTENTS OF THIS CD-ROM:

History of the Minisink Region

By Charles E. Stickney (1867)

Including the present towns of  Minisink, Deerpark, Mount Hope, Greenville, and Wawayanda, in Orange County, New York

We first heard of this book when we were republishing some of the local history classics of neighboring Sullivan County, NY. When we obtained a copy, we moved this project immediately to the top of our to-do list.  Many of the historical events that affected what was to become Sullivan County affected the Minisink Region of Orange County as well.  Many of the family names are found in both locations.

We have compiled a new and complete index of this work (the original had no index, and the one index we know of is incomplete).  We're glad to provide our new index for use online.  Please respect our copyright and the work that goes into an index such as this.  We hope it is useful to you.

Port Jervis High School yearbook

the 1934 yearbook of Port Jervis High School

We included this on the CD because we think this will appeal to those who are interested in the history of "the Minisink" but whose families were not among the early settlers (and thus not in the Stickney book).  We found the "class prophesy" among the 59 pages in this volume (the year they projected to was 1950, more than half a century back as we write this) both quaint and touching.  Perhaps you will too, even if you have no connection with Port Jervis High School.  Here's a sample page from the senior pictures for this yearbook.  Click on this thumbnail to see a larger version:

Some will be interested in learning what Port Jervis HS is like today, some 71 years after the class of 1934 graduated.  You can reach their official website (marked "under construction") by clicking here.   And you can find out more about Port Jervis today by checking the "portjervisny.com" website by clicking here.

 Port Jervis Directory for 1922

a VERY hard to find volume about Port Jervis, NY

This item is a real rarity today.  It is a combination of "Yellow Pages", information about governmental services in the area, a street guide (who lived or had their business at what number on each street), an alphabetic list of names, including spouse's name, street address, occupation, home address (when the address given is a business address) and a classified business directory.  Here's a sample page from that directory -- click on the image to see a full-sized picture, and use your left arrow to return to this web page:

Page from Port Jervis directory

Also included is the same information for Sparrowbush, for Matamoras, PA, and for Milford, PA.   The bad news about this particular item is that the first 18 pages (some of the display ads for local businesses) and a few pages at the end (pages following 275, which ends with "Williams, Wm. (Rosa) lab h 412 Seventh" -- near the end of the Milford, PA, names directory) are missing.

The good news is that the names directory is complete for Port Jervis, Sparrowbush, and Matamoras, PA (and "W" is pretty far down the alphabet for Matamoras, too!). We made this discovery as we began the scanning process.  We feel these rather few missing pages do not justify keeping this rare book from republication, but we certainly do not want anyone to be disappointed -- perhaps if they are looking for someone in Milford whose name starts with "Y"!  Many people will find this book -- even with its minor deficiencies -- sufficient reason to buy the CD.

Photos and maps

We customarily include some of each from our own collection and from images donated by others.  Perhaps most notable in this category are a series of topographic maps of the area from around a century ago.

Please feel free to make use of the new index!
