Ulster and Sullivan County, NY genealogy

Cross family genealogy

A CD-ROM of New York State Genealogy

Around 35 years ago, the Cross Family Association made available to its members some mimeographed typescript material known as "Cross - New York State 1775 - 1975".

It was an important event for a family that had been trying -- unsuccessfully -- to link their family to a Massachusetts Cross family.

The discovery that Noah Cross was actually a British soldier who deserted on Long Island, made his way to the Shawangunk Mountains of Ulster County, married a local girl of Dutch ancestry, and subsequently fought on the American side in the American Revolution was certainly an important one for the descendents of that couple.

Cross -- New York State 1775 - 1975

The original consisted of around 170 pages of genealogy, but it's been heavily annotated for the nearly 35 years it's been in our possession, and we're in the process of consolidating additional sources of information (mainly branches of the family omitted from the original), confirming data already in the compilation where possible, adding photographs and newspaper clippings where we have been able to locate them for more recent generations, and formalizing it as a genealogy, with each family member assigned a number indicating generation and line of descent.

We're also indexing it completely (interestingly, this typescript was our introduction to indexing back 30 years ago, and we've learned a lot about the craft since then -- this will be a much more useful index, we promise!).  We have collected historical topographical maps of the areas of Ulster County and Sullivan County that this family principally inhabited for the first seven generations or so.  And we're going to take advantage of the major improvements in technology that the past few decades have brought to include lots of pictures!  An appendix already underway traces Rachel Osterhout's ancestry -- back to the boat and before.

At present, the compilation is over 250 pages long and growing daily.

Importantly, we're trying to re-establish contact with any remnants of the Cross Family Association who may still be alive and (hopefully) still working on family history.  If you fit this description, please click the "Contacting us" button in the left margin of this page and help us make sure your part of the family is correctly represented.

How can I obtain the Cross Family CD-ROM?

Please join our mailing list.  We'll let you know when it's available -- and, if you can help with Cross family information, we'll recruit you as well!
