Some web links relevant to Fallsburgh history...
for information about ordering the CD-ROM
|
History in general:
Sullivan County Historical Society:
Fallsburg, of course, is one of the townships in Sullivan County.
Take a look at Sullivan County's Historical
Society.
Catskill Archive:
New to us, and mainly oriented toward the "High
Catskills" of Ulster and Greene Counties, but the Catskill
Archive is still worth a look.

|
Resorts:
Catskills Institute:
The
Catskills Institute, hosted by Brown University, is principally dedicated to
the study of the effect of the resorts that made up "The Catskills" upon
Jewish life in America today. However, their site is much more comprehensive
and far more inclusive than their principal purpose would suggest. The
Town of Fallsburg was one third of the so-called "Golden Triangle" of the
Borscht Circuit. We think you need to take a look at this site. Need we say more?

A website about The Pines:
In April 2003, this finally-abandoned resort was badly damaged by
a fire termed "suspicious" by local law enforcement. However, it
was still functioning only two or three years before. There are now at least two
websites active that recall the hotel's glory days -- and track its
decline. If you have an interest it The Pines
(or what has become of the resort industry), check them out!!
|
Railroad:
New York Ontario & Western Railroad Historical Society:
The O&W snaked through Sullivan County, right up the middle
of the Town of Fallsburg. At least during the century that the
"Old Woman" was the principal means of freight and passenger transport in
Sullivan County, the communities on the railroad prospered, and those off it
withered. ("Prospered" is a relative term, of course).
Although the O&W missed the actual village of Fallsburg, it was central to many
of the other villages in the Township. The NYO&W
Historical Society has plenty of information and pictures, and society
President George Shammas contributed several postcards to the CD-ROM.

Education:
Fallsburg Central School:
Fallsburg
Central School District has an active technology program. Here's their
website.
-- NOTE: this link is only occasional operative -- we don't know why.
Sullivan County Community College:
Located in Loch Sheldrake, SCCC, a member of the State University
of New York group of colleges, draws students from around the world. Here is
the official SCCC website.

Communities:
We had originally intended to provide two or three links for each
of the villages and hamlets that make up the Town of Fallsburg. Sadly, to
date we have found links of historic interest that are locale-specific only for Mountaindale.
We'll add more as we find them!
Mountaindale:
- In 1970, in an attempt to capture the magic of the previous
year's Woodstock Festival, promoters planned a rock and classical music
festival in Mountaindale, called "Mountaindale: Bach to Rock".
While the festival was prevented by injunction,
to visit a website of
recollections of that "almost
festival".
- Some long-time residents have bought up much of downtown
Mountaindale and are attempting to revive the village as both a business
and arts community. There's a lengthy section where former visitors and
residents have written in their memories and where you can too!
to visit.

A rather sad evaluation of Mountaindale's venture in professional
baseball, Baxter
Park.

including those specific to the Town of Fallsburg.
