Litchfield, CT history |
| Litchfield County,
Connecticut -- the northwest-most county of the state -- is where Between the Lakes Group is headquartered, so we
admit to
a certain partiality for local history of this general area.
What's coming next in our Litchfield County series? Now that Twin Lakes, where we live and have our business, has been "discovered" (according to the Lakeville Journal), we will be documenting what remains of old Twin lakes and what new Twin Lakes is shaping up like. We've started photography for this but we have much, much more to do. We'll do more photography this summer, including detailed documentation of what the lakefront looks like from a boat. We have agreed to publish for the first time Judith Moore Sherman's paper entitled "Land Speculation in Colonial Salisbury". This paper reexamines the folklore about rampant land speculation during the Colonial period and subjects it to a standard of proof -- namely, exhaustive analysis of land transaction records and vital records of the period. We've also been collecting additional materials about several aspects of the history of Salisbury Township -- items outside the mainstream and generally unavailable elsewhere -- and we think that we have a real project taking shape here. We've been continuing to collect material about Lime Rock, so it is not an unreasonable expectation that a second Lime Rock CD-ROM will be coming along to supplement our Lime Rock Walking Tour CD. We've also got the first two volumes of the Historical Collections of the Salisbury Association (1913) which deserve republication for sure. We've been accumulating additional Salisbury CT materials as well. We are always interested in undertaking new projects involving publication or republication of local history, particularly in Litchfield County. Please contact us with your suggestions. One problem that bedevils anyone trying to research local history or genealogy in an unfamiliar place is changing place named. Roads, lakes, rivers, communities all are subjected to name changes over the decades and centuries. Some place names vanish completely -- except in old records where they come up occasionally, seemingly to bedevil the researcher. Keeping some kind of tabulation of these changed geographic names to help visitors get their bearings seems
to be the kind of courtesy any locale ought to routinely extend but very, very few
do. We have begun such an effort for Litchfield County, secure in the
knowledge that our efforts will always be insufficient, and that this is a task that will never be completed. Please
We also republish local history about other areas. Please
And, don't forget to try the red "Search our website" button at the bottom of every page. We're a little unusual because we put an index on line for each of our publications. That way, you can find out whether a subject you're interested in is covered BEFORE you buy. Because of Litchfield County's significant role in the
iron industry, be sure to
