Some Questions and Answers about the Memories of Liberty, New York CD-ROM:
|
Question: Why
did Geoff Brown get started producing CD-ROMs about the history of Liberty for Between the Lakes Group?
Answer: He remembers Liberty....maybe
you do too!! (or maybe a friend or family member does)
A
copy of the 1919 Annual was in Helen Cross Brown's papers (she was a member of that
class, and later Principal of Mountaindale High School, and a substitute
teacher in the Liberty schools) when she died in 1991. That's where it began. When your compiler turned up lots of old photographs the project
expanded beyond the just 1919 Annual and an index.
|
Question: What
else is there on the FIRST Liberty CD-ROM?
-
Commentary, including many photos, about Liberty
through the years. If you ever knew the compiler of this
CD-ROM, Geoff Brown, you could anticipate this <grin>.
|
Question: Where can I get MORE
Liberty information?
Answer: A good place to start, once
you've got our first Memories of Liberty CD,
would be our Memories of Liberty, Volume II.
They make a great pair!

Question: How did you decide to let people order
with a credit card? That looks like "big business" to me!
Answer: We had been thinking
about PayPal™ for a while. While we didn't expect to
sell enough copies of our CD-ROMs to justify taking credit cards, two things made us
change our minds. First, we heard from a potential buyer in Europe -- he
wondered if he could pay us in Euros, and the charge our small-town bank would make for
exchanging Euros would have been what the CD-ROM cost. Credit card companies,
of course, take care of the foreign exchange transaction automatically, and
furthermore, they do it at "bank rates". Second, we discovered that
lots of people were printing out the order form but never mailing an order
in. To us, that meant that we needed to let them get the whole transaction
done right away, before they forgot about it. PayPal represented an easy way
to do that.
So, try it, and tell us how you like
our adventure in e-commerce!! We're finding that an increasing percentage of
our customers now use this option in preference to mailing us a check. |
Question:
Is the Liberty CD-ROM REALLY ready to ship or are you just taking orders?
Answer: They are
both shipping right
now. We shipped the first copy of the first Memories of Liberty
CD-ROM in March, 2002, and the first copy of Volume II in October 2006.
You can read bona fide,
unsolicited comments by people who have already received the CD-ROM if you
.
By the way, at Between the Lakes Group, we simply don't accept orders
until we are ready to put the product in the mail. Yes, we know that's really old-fashioned in an age
when companies announce software (and accept orders) months before it's
available. So I guess we're old fashioned! |
Question:
Will this CD-ROM run on my PC?
Answer: If you're viewing this
on the Internet, and you are using a PC, the answer is "most probably YES". We've
constructed it using web browser technology, and have tested it on machines as old
as a Dell 486. We've also tested it on a brand new Pentium 4 running Windows
XP Professional, and several in between. It runs nicely on all of them.
People who order the CD-ROM also receive access to a web page where any updates,
limitations, or corrections are listed. However, some users of older Macs may be
disappointed with the first Liberty CD.
if you're a Mac user and you're
interested in any of our CD-ROMs. |
Question: This has really interested me in the history of
the Liberty area. How can I get involved?
Answer: There's a Yahoo!Group
called "LibertyNY". It's moderated by Geoff Brown, the compiler of
the "Memories of Liberty" CD-ROM. It costs nothing to
subscribe.
to sign up for that e-mail group. We'll be glad to hear from you!
Since the CD-ROM was produced, some wonderful
Liberty folks have started an organization called the Liberty Alumni
Association. We think it's a great idea, and we're very happy to offer
a link to their website:
